Owner Bio
I will be 70 years old as of Aug. 2024 and live in Altoona, Iowa (a suburb of Des Moines) with my wife Janet.  We have two sons, a 40-year-old who teaches middle school math in a nearby school district, and a 37-year-old who also lives in the Des Moines area and is a trainer for a large insurance company.  We have 2 grandchildren, a girl and a boy.  Until 2008 I had lived almost all of my adult life in Manchester, a small town in northeast Iowa.  49 years ago I set out to become a high school social studies teacher but got sidetracked into politics and spent 16 years as a member of the Iowa House of Representatives, from 1979 through 1994. (This is when I met fellow VBG'ers Eric Borseth and Mike Coveyou when they joined my Ballpark Baseball league.) Since Iowa has a part-time legislature, I worked in a variety of other jobs during this time, first as a substitute teacher, then as a crop insurance adjuster, and finally teaching political science for the University of Northern Iowa, and economics and American history for Upper Iowa University. In 1994 I left the legislature (voluntarily), spent a year in a job working with city and county economic development programs in northeast Iowa, and then went to work for Iowa State University Extension as the director of the Delaware County Extension Service.

Even though I thought I had left politics in 1994, I still got involved in public policy from time to time, including a term on the Manchester City Council and serving three terms as the chairman of the Iowa Environmental Protection Commission.  Then in late 2007 I was appointed to the Iowa Utilities Board, a 3-member quasi-judicial commission that regulates public electric, gas, water, and telephone utilities. (In most other states we would be called the Public Utility Commission or the Public Service Commission.)  This position is a full-time job, so I left northeast Iowa and moved to the Des Moines area.  My term ran until the end of April, 2013.  A different governor had taken office by then, and as usually happens, he wanted to appoint his own people to the Board and I was out of a job.  But thanks to the generosity of the state pension system I was able to retire to a life of semi-leisure.  I then worked part-time for a few years, first as a memger of an energy policy consulting group and then as a college instructor for the Des Moines Area Community College (political science) and the Arizona State University law school (Energy Law & Policy).  I am now fully retired.

I discovered baseball simulation games during my freshman year at the University of Kansas where I became addicted to a local tabletop game called Ballpark Baseball that at the time could only be played in The Ballpark, a Lawrence bar.  When Ballpark Baseball became availble as a commercial product separate from the Lawrence bar, I started a Ballpark league in Des Moines. It was through that league that I met current VBGers Mike Coveyou and Eric Borseth.  Thanks to Mike Coveyou I joined the VBG when it was formed in 2002.  I now belong to a pair of Rotisserie leagues with current VBGers Mike Coveyou, Tom Alberts, and former VBG'er Doug Stout, and used to include VBGers Eric and Brandon Borseth and my son Mark Hanson.  The Rotisserie leagues are a real challenge for someone like me who doesn't pay a lot of attention to current MLB.  An active SABR member, I still have a strong interest in the history of the game and have been marginally involved with SABR's BioProject.

Other interests include history (especially American history in 1774-1800 and 1850-77), almost any kind of music, travel (especially to places of historical significance), and playing almost any kind of strategy game.
